So Jake Long walked into Dolphins Stadium Tuesday, his mother on his right arm, smiling a first-pick grin and loving every moment. His smile was wider than the Florida coast and yes, Long, Michigan’s monstrous offensive lineman will be the first pick in the NFL Draft Saturday. A reported five-year, $57.75 million contract has Long switching from the biting cold of Ann Arbor to the balmy sun, and rain, of Miami.
Welcome aboard Jake. The Gasman welcomes you personally (since he is an avid Fins fan). And Long is the perfect fit for Miami and Bill Parcells’ masterful scheme. Parcells loves to select big lineman and Long will certainly be a Pro Bowler in years to come.
The news isn’t a surprise to the Gasman. Matt Ryan (subpar NFL player at best) and Darren McFadden (too many distractions) don’t fit the Parcells’ bill. The Tuna doesn’t want McFadden’s tag of arrests outside of nightclubs. He never wasted picks on running backs either. Then, there’s Glenn Dorsey and Chris Long. Both are equally talented, but neither, again, fit Parcells 3-4 defensive scheme. So Long can now learn to block for second-year quarterback John Beck.
The Tuna is apparently sold on Beck, who threw for 559 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions in four starts in 2007. Not exceptional statistics, but it definitely sounds like Parcells-efficiency passing.
Jake Long can only bring promise to the sunny skies of Miami and some breathing room for Beck. There hasn’t been hope since Ricky Williams decided to join Spicoli’s crew. The Fins have floundered since, only to watch great players like Zach Thomas, Sam Madison, Chris Chambers and Adewale Ogunleye depart to greener pastures. There was simply nothing left, except for Ronnie Brown and he’s recovering from an ACL tear.
So, hopefully, Long is the answer in a quadratic equation for Miami. It will take time. But Long’s presence on the line can only help and is the right choice in a draft that has no other first-pick fits.
