There were plenty of significant moments this past week. Here are a few to digest.
5 – Roger Clemens. The Rocket can’t stay out of the news, and lately it’s gone from bad to worse. Clemens’ character was certainly questioned on Capitol Hill after the Mitchell Report enlightened the public. Sunday night, the New York Daily News reported on its website that Clemens had a relationship with country singer Mindy McCready. According to the Associated Press, she was 15 when the two began having a nonsexual relationship. Clemens, then, was pitching for the Red Sox and his lawyer, Rusty Hardin, vehemently denies any kind of “inappropriate relationship.” This comes after Clemens was implicated by his former trainer Brian McNamee that he took steroids and human growth hormone. The two argued in Washington and the seven-time Cy Young winner filed a defamation suit against McNamee. Poor Rocket. When it rains, it pours.
4 – Brandon Webb. The Arizona righthander has been perfect this season, bumping his record to 6-0 with a 2-1 win over San Diego Sunday. He’s a prime reason why the D-Backs are a league-best 18-7. Webb has almost as many wins as the Rangers and Nationals. This guy is on a tear, and could be on his way to the Cy Young.
3 – NFL Draft. Ah football in April. It’s a time where fans who watched dismal seasons finally hear something positive about their teams. Consider the effects on Kansas City fans when Mel Kiper Jr., perfect hair and all, said the Chiefs had the best draft. Well, that’s about all they will be cheering for next season. Anyway, there weren’t many surprises this year, like Brady Quinn falling off of the earth and draft board last year. But there were good moments, especially when Army’s Caleb Campbell was selected 218th overall by the Detroit Lions. It’s rare that cadets are drafted and Campbell’s selection was good to see.
2 – John Smoltz. Yes, the Gasman knows he could miss his next start with soreness in his pitching shoulder. But Happy 3,000th strikeout! Only 16 other pitchers have accomplished the feat. And Smoltz even spent 3 1/2 years in the bullpen. His first strikeout came against slugger Darryl Strawberry. His last, well, time will tell who that will be.
1 – Kyle Busch. The wiener of NASCAR was quite busy on Sunday. Early in the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega, Busch’s teammate Denny Hamlin blocked the Las Vegas-native from entering his pit stall. Busch was relegated to a lap down, and he battled back to the front, even making a tremendous late-lap save after Jamie McMurray clipped Busch. Both cars wobbled at close to 200 mph, but neither started the big wreck. So congrats Kyle on your second Sprint Cup win this season. Good job. Maybe now he’ll pep up is personality.
Bonehead of the week: Josh Howard. Welcome to Disgraceland Mr. Howard. Seemingly with nothing better to say, Howard admitted to smoking marijuana during the offseason. He also said that most of the league partakes in smoking. Let’s clear this up for Josh. No. 1: Smoking marijuana is illegal. No 2: It’s against the NBA’s substance abuse policy. No. 3: It’s illegal and No. 4: It’s illegal.
Not only did Howard implicate himself, he threw half of the league under his one-man bus. Perhaps the extra stress caused him to shoot 3-for-16 from the floor in Dallas’ 97-84 loss to New Orleans Sunday, which gave the Hornets a 3-1 series advantage. Or maybe he shot poorly because he can smell the seasons end and lighting up is right around the corner? Whatever the reason, Howard’s comments weren’t good for him, the Dallas Mavericks, the NBA and certainly not the sport of basketball.
