Here’s a bold statement: Chien-Ming Wang is the best pitcher in the big leagues. Astonished? Maybe. Curious? Perhaps.
The statement may raise eyebrows, but it does have validity. Since 2006, Wang has the most wins among all pitchers (he’s also 3-0 this season). He’s become the top starter in the world’s toughest market, taking the hill at Yankees Stadium without fear. For those who watch him, it seems as if Wang has worn pinstripes for years. And last night’s dominance of a high-octane Red Sox lineup chiseled another notch of why Wang is simply the best.
Wang held the Sawx to just two hits, including a home run that Bobby Abreu should’ve caught at the right-center field wall. Hideki Matsui would’ve had it. Even Emmanuel Lewis would’ve had it. Nonetheless, the homer was the only blemish to Wang’s night, which helped the Yanks take a 1-0 lead in this year’s rivalry series.
It’s eery to say that Wang is the best hurler out there, especially since there are pitchers like Johan Santana, Jake Peavy, Josh Beckett and Tim Hudson. Sure, Wang did nothing in the playoffs last year. But that was due to the Yankees’ bats being as silent Pootie Tang’s latest single.
Santana’s teams haven’t done anything in the playoffs either and Beckett is the only one on that list who has had success in the postseason. He’s aging, though, and it’s seemingly Wang’s turn as the ace. He’s durable, masterful and he is simply on a tear to open the season (1.23 ERA so far). And overall, he’s the Yanks only hope at winning this season.
Thoughts from Friday’s game: The rivalry is as heated as ever, and it’s only April! There wasn’t an on-field fracas. But you could feel the tension in the stands, even from your living room…Jason Giambi’s home run in the seventh was certainly a moment to relish. Giambi was slumping, like most of the other Yanks, and his blast off of the 42-year old Mike Timlin is proof of why Timlin needs to hang them up…What’s up with Manny Ramirez’s doo rag? Did he get special permission to wear it in the field? Even NFL players with long hair have to wear a helmet. So, what’s next for Boston’s uniforms? Khaki shorts and crocs?
